The purpose of this study is to analyse the relevance
of the theory of the "ripeness" in the resolution
of selected cases of conflicts in Asia. This is done
through the identification of the core conceptual components
of William A. Zartman’s theoretical approach to
the study of conflict resolution.
To analyse the selected cases of Asian conflicts in relation
to Zartman’s theoretical approach will contribute
to the testing of the explanatory value of Zartman’s
theoretical approach and also to access the relevance
of his approach for the understanding of conflict resolution
of individual cases of conflict. The study and the testing
also aim at contributing to the on-going scholarly assessment
of the general relevance of theoretical approaches to
conflict resolution in the field of peace and conflict
research.
The structure of the study is as follows. First, there
is the identification of the core elements of Zartman’s
theoretical approach. Second, criteria for the selection
of cases are formulated and selection of cases of Asian
conflict is carried out. Third, the empirical developments
relating to the cases are outlined. Fourth, the possible
linkages between the selected cases are identified. Fifth,
the explanatory value of Zartman’s theoretical
approach is evaluated through an analysis of the empirical
developments leading to the resolution of the selected
cases. Sixth, a summary of the findings of the study
is presented and conclusions are drawn.
