Peace Week at USM

Mindanao

A presentation of the Mindanao Conflict Case was one of the main events in this year’s Peace Week celebration at the Universiti Sains Malaysia. It featured a photo exhibit at the Dewan Budaya entitled “A Second Look at Mindanao” which showed the beautiful sceneries and rich culture of Mindanao and the Moro people. Anchored on the peace week theme “ Harmony-Foundation for Peace”, a seminar discussing the Mindanao peace process was conducted by guest speaker Ayesah Abubakar of the Young Moro Professionals Network – an NGO based in Manila. Ms. Abubakar gave an orientation to the USM academe and guests on the history of the Moro struggle and the ongoing peace negotiations between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines. She also highlighted the critical role of the Malaysian government as host, facilitator and mediator to the peace talks.

At the seminar, the audience had a chance to watch a short documentary describing the difficult situation of the Moro evacuees and refugees in times of armed conflict. “House Under the Crescent Moon” is an award winning film produced and directed by a young Moro filmmaker, Gutierrez Mangansakan II. Mr. Mangansakan has been awarded by ABS-CBN International as “Filipino Achiever for the Millenium” for his laudable film projects. He is also a member of the YMP Network
