Letter from The SEACSN Regional Coordinator

Vietnam is a fascinating country that I have had the privilege of visiting in my role of SEACSN Regional Coordinator. In this issue we focus on two different aspects of Vietnam. Firstly, ‘Vietnam: Searching for long lasting peace and ethnic equality’ an interesting overview prepared by our colleagues in SEACSN Vietnam. Secondly, an article entitled ‘Environmental conflict in Ha Long Bay’. This is the condensed version of the research report submitted by Dr Wongsa Laohasiriwong from Khon Kaen University, on completion of her research undertaken as part of the SEACSN Research and Exchange Programme.

To give readers an opportunity to hear about the other side of the SEACSN Research and Exchange Programme, we also include ‘A Rookie Researcher’s report’ by Assistant Professor Nikki Briones, from De La Salle University, Philippines. This article focuses on the process of being involved with the Research and Exchange Programme. I hope it will encourage any readers who may be unsure as to whether or not to apply, to give it further serious consideration.

We are also delighted to include ‘Brunei Darussalam – A nation in peace’ by Dr B. A. Husseinmiya, University of Brunei Darussalem. Dr Husseinmiya is a Senior Lecturer at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam and has written a couple of books about the country.

We have also included information about the SEACSN conference which will be held in Penang, Malaysia in January 2004. We would like to encourage our members (and non-members to attend. The call for papers is currently going on and we encourage people to forum panels for this conference. Lets hope that this will be successful conference for all.

We hope that you learn from and enjoy this Bulletin.
