"Issues and Challenges for Peace and Conflict Resolution in Southeast Asia"
The SEACSN Conference was opened on Monday, 12 January 2004 at 9am with a short speech by the Regional Co-ordinator, Dr Kamarulzaman Askandar. Dr Zam outlined some of the achievements of the network since the idea was first conceived at a conference in Penang some five years earlier.
Datuk Professor Syed Ahmad Hussein, Deputy Vice Chancellor at Universiti Sains Malaysia, followed Dr Zam, welcoming participants from all over the world to the beautiful island of Penang. USM is one of the conference sponsors and is delighted to be involved with the SEACSN.
Welcoming remarks were then given by Associate Professor Dr. Ramses Amer representing SAREC, the research body of the Swedish International Development and Co-operation Agency (Sida), the main sponsor for the network. Dr Ramses expressed what a wonderful opportunity the conference was as:
  • The twenty nine panels, each containing three or four papers, provide the opportunity for fellow academics to meet and discuss their specialist areas.
  • It provides the opportunity for academics to broaden their minds through being able to attend sessions given by fellow researchers on other topics within the broader field of peace and conflict resolution.
The Conference was honoured to have His Excellency Abdurrahman Wahid, Former President, Republic of Indonesia give the keynote address and officially open the proceedings. His Excellency spoke of the vital need within the world to learn how to carry out the peace resolution process. He spoke of how weapons are too often used to solve quarrels instead of words. He also spoke of the need for disputing parties to always remember that wherever we are in history, we are always a part of a bigger context, a larger picture which sets the true framework from which
any situation should be examined. His Excellency then permitted a short question and answer session for the delegates.
