The Southeast Asian
Conflict Studies Network (SEACSN) was created
in 2001 as a research and networking platform
for researchers, academicians, practitioners,
NGO workers, students, and anybody else who are
interested in peace and conflict studies in the
region. The SEACSN hopes that by getting involved
in the activities of the Network, these people
can deepened their knowledge about the relevant
fields and learn from experts and other like-minded
people in the region. Networking is important
because it makes us aware that there are others
that are also doing the same work as we do and
we can turn to these people for information,
assistance, and support.
As an organization, the SEACSN basic objectives are the
promotion of cooperation among researchers in Southeast
Asia; the promotion of research in peace and conflict
resolution in the region in accordance with the themes
of SEACSN; producing a body of work on conflict analysis
and conflict resolution; and conducting a Southeast Asian
conflict mapping research program. The uniqueness of
the Network lies in the fact that the idea of the network
originated from within the region and involves mainly
regional actors working with each other to find peaceful
solutions to the conflicts in Southeast Asia.
This directory should be helpful to researchers and other
interested parties in locating individuals and organizations
involved in the areas of peace and conflict studies and
other related activities in the Southeast Asian region.
It features the profiles of organizations involved, including
those from the academe, and governmental and non-governmental
organizations from 9 countries in Southeast Asia. A total
of 375 individuals, 66 academic institutions, 32 governmental
organizations and 417 non-governmental organizations
are listed in this directory. Entries, by individuals,
from Cambodia totaled 8, Laos 70, Malaysia 112, Philippines
105 and Vietnam 80. Entries, by organizations, from Cambodia
totaled 60, Laos 6, Indonesia 39, Malaysia 51, Philippines
314, Singapore 5, Thailand 11 and Vietnam 29.
This Directory is part of an ongoing project of the Network
in this first phase (2001 – 2003) to identify individuals
and institutions who have been involved in peace and
conflict resolution activities. It involves the distribution
of a questionnaire to potential individuals and organizations
all over the region. The National Coordinators and their
staff members at the national level have been instrumental
in getting the data needed for this directory. In all
the countries, one or a few staff members have been assigned
to this project, diligently gathering the data, calling
the recipients to confirm information, and compiling
everything into a comprehensible format. In some countries,
the SEACSN national office has enrolled the help of local
NGOs and individuals to help identify and locate potential
individuals and organizations for the Directory, distribute
the questionnaires and getting them back. Information
asked in the questionnaire includes contact addresses
of persons and organizations, and institutional profile,
including their objectives and core activities of the
organization. There have been hiccups here and there
while working on this Directory including the loss of
data due to a virus attack, the delay in getting questionnaires
out and the information back in again, reminding organizations
to return the questionnaire, and all the time needed
to input raw data, compiling them, and verifying them
again and again. All the problems have also resulted
in the delay in getting the final edited copy of the
Directory out. But despite all these, we at the SEACSN
feel that this has been a worthwhile effort and would
not mind doing it again in the future by way of updating
the information in the Directory.
This effort would not have been possible without the
cooperation of all the SEACSN national offices: The Research
and Education for Peace (REP), Universiti Sains Malaysia;
The La Salle Institute of Governance (LSIG), De La Salle
University, Philippines; The Department of Administration
and Civil Service, Laos; The Centre for Security and
Peace Studies (CSPS), Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia;
The Department of Political Science, National University
of Singapore; The Alliance for Conflict Transformation
(ACT), Cambodia; Institute for Dispute Resolution (IDR),
Khon Kaen University, Thailand; and Institute for International
Relations (IIR), Vietnam. To all, thank you. The SEACSN
would also like to thank the Swedish International Development
and Cooperation Agency (Sida), and especially its research
department SAREC, for their generous contributions to
the Network and in making all the activities possible.
We hope that this Directory will be of use to you in
your own work. Please tell us if your organization is
not included or if the information is incorrect. You
may also visit out website www.seacsn.net for more information
about the Network and our activities.
